Do your friends hold you back from growing now?

Do your friends hold you back from growing?

Do you feel like your friends and surroundings might be hindering your progress? I don’t know if you realize but we all want to gain acceptance from our surroundings. The lack of acceptance is unpleasant, and the need for acceptance by our surroundings is inherent in our nature, because without the help of our surroundings we could never survive. Nowadays functioning without the help of others is very difficult in every aspect of life.

This is why you subconsciously try to be like your environment because you want to be accepted this environment. You want to be able to get help from others and you feel good when in the group. Everything is fine until you want to change something in your life, because it will almost always mean moving away from your group and often you’ll have to face the reluctance of this environment.

You become like the people you associate with

Imagine that you’re surrounded by folks who love to party, knock back a few drinks, and smoke cigarettes. Maybe some of these people don’t have a job and complain about the world around them. They do not leave their city and spend most of their lives there. Maybe it’s a slightly overexaggerated example, but let’s just say it’s your environment. It doesn’t matter if it’s the closest family, friends, or maybe both. What kind of person do you think you’ll be in this environment for a long time? If you stay in this group, you will take over a lot of the features of such an environment over time and you will certainly do what people in this group do. Even if it doesn’t suit you. Unfortunately, this is how our world works.

Let’s switch gears for a moment and imagine that you’re surrounded by people who regularly take care of their physical condition, work hard and smart, learn new things, earn a good living, read books, and have insightful discussions about various possibilities. They often hit the road together and enjoy discovering new places. What will your life look like if your surroundings are just like this? Like before, you will take over most of the features of your environment—after all, you want to stay in the group and feel good, have contacts, relationships, etc.

The principle of operation is the same

You take over the characteristics of your environment. It doesn’t matter whether they’re positive or negative. This is how the world works and everyone wants to be accepted and adapts to their surroundings.

Why do you speak the language you speak? Because everyone around you speaks that language. But why more and more people in Poland also speak English? Because English is increasingly surrounding us in our country. Why did Poland ever have a socialist system, the shelves in shops were empty and the older generation was taught Russian in school? Because we were influenced by an environment from the East, which affected us so much. The more daring ones ventured abroad, where they were exposed to the influence of a richer and more liberal environment. And so, they became richer and more liberal themselves.

Who are you surrounding yourself with?

Think about it. Your immediate family, your friends, your associates, or even your life partner. Every day, they define so much what you become. Your friends invite you for a beer, and you go with them. Then you have a hangover all day long and you don’t feel like doing anything. Did you know that someone else during this time might have published two books on Amazon or worked a fourteen-hour shift as a waiter, put aside a few hundred zlotys for their first business, and learned a few new sentences in English? So, what’s been going on in your life during this time?

A nice example I heard listening to an English-language podcast about US Marines. These are very disciplined soldiers who are always in great shape. The beds are made immaculately. However, when they finish their service, their shape and standards often drop dramatically. They lose their shape, their willingness to live and often become even unemployed. Why is it that one moment these soldiers are at the peak of discipline, and then so many of them drastically let their standards slip? You probably already know the answer.

The environment during their service demands them to be the best possible version of themselves. They can’t let it slide, because then they’ll be cut off from the group. Each of them adjusts to the rest, which requires a daily battle with oneself and being a better person. As they gradually change their environment to one that is clearly less demanding, they lose their motivation and take on the characteristics of their new environment.

How was it in my case?

During my studies, I had a group of friends who were cool people. However, the only way they spent their free time was by drinking alcohol. What do you think, how did it affect me? I didn’t want to be a loner, and I did what they did, too. The worst part was that I even liked it—after all, if others live like that, what’s wrong with it?

In my surroundings, I also interacted with many people who smoked cigarettes. My family, friends at school, then my first long-term partner. How did it affect me? Of course, for many years I smoked, and even when I tried to quit smoking, it never worked out because there were always cigarettes around me, and I returned to the habit. It was only by cutting off what didn’t suit me, leaving behind friends and people who had a negative impact on me, that I was able to rediscover the joy of life and develop healthy habits.

I now successfully work as a manager, build my own business, and have released hundreds of products on Amazon. How did I do that? I’ve changed my place of residence, I work with people from all over the world, I read biographies of famous individuals (in a way, I surround myself with them), I watch movies of those better than me (God, thank you for YouTube), I buy and participate in online courses related to business and Amazon, I seek new acquaintances, and so on. I’ve changed my environment, and my life has turned 180 degrees — that’s what this blog is all about.

How to change your environment?

If your environment is pulling you down (if that’s the case, you’re probably aware of it already), then you’re in for a challenge. How to start? Gradually, start surrounding yourself with people better than you.

You don’t have to give up your whole life right away. Read books, meet new people, take courses (the Amazon course changed my life years ago), try new things, take risks, and try something new. Get inspired every day with affirmations, watch my videos and take action.

Books + internet

In these times, we are fortunate that knowledge is at our fingertips. We can have a business teacher from the other end of the country or the world. I learned business on Amazon from someone on the other side of the world through a course worth only a few hundred dollars. All I had to do was want and act. I recently invested in a year-long business course for $300, and for the next year, I will be surrounded by ambitious people and gaining valuable business knowledge. This is how you change your surroundings. Today, it is easier than ever, so I encourage you to take action. Good luck!

Do your friends hold you back from growing? — watch the video

1
00:00:00,800 –> 00:00:04,386
Hi, I’m Tomek.
From Waiter To Millionaire. Welcome.

2
00:00:04,387 –> 00:00:08,786
Today, I want to tell you
about a very important topic for me

3
00:00:08,787 –> 00:00:13,300
and for everyone of you,
even though you may not realize that.

4
00:00:13,301 –> 00:00:18,443
Your surroundings, friends,
the closest people in your life –

5
00:00:18,444 –> 00:00:25,119
whether these are co-workers, people in
school, at work, family, colleagues –

6
00:00:25,120 –> 00:00:28,100
they all have a huge impact on you.

7
00:00:28,101 –> 00:00:34,400
Now, like in this video’s title –
do they block you from self-development?

8
00:00:34,401 –> 00:00:38,529
I want to answer this question
within the next few minutes.

9
00:00:38,530 –> 00:00:44,200
For example, let’s say that
your loved ones, your family and friends

10
00:00:44,201 –> 00:00:48,243
are the people who like to party,
often go out for beer,

11
00:00:48,244 –> 00:00:52,486
drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes,
complain about the world,

12
00:00:52,487 –> 00:00:56,929
maybe many of them don’t work,
they don’t leave their circle

13
00:00:56,930 –> 00:01:02,229
and they don’t travel anywhere –
that’s what your surroundings look like.

14
00:01:02,230 –> 00:01:08,057
How do you react to it – you try to be
above them or you just conform?

15
00:01:08,058 –> 00:01:12,200
I think that if you live in
such surroundings for years,

16
00:01:12,201 –> 00:01:16,999
then you’ll start to become
the same person as they are,

17
00:01:17,000 –> 00:01:22,000
whether you want it or not, because
you’ll try to automatically adjust.

18
00:01:22,001 –> 00:01:24,586
It may not suit you,
you may suffer,

19
00:01:24,587 –> 00:01:28,300
but as long as you don’t get out of
such environment,

20
00:01:28,301 –> 00:01:30,314
you’ll become such a person.

21
00:01:30,315 –> 00:01:35,900
Imagine that your friends are people who
play sport, avoid alcohol,

22
00:01:35,901 –> 00:01:41,000
don’t smoke cigarettes,
like to travel, to discuss wise topics,

23
00:01:41,001 –> 00:01:44,000
maybe they do business,
read books –

24
00:01:44,001 –> 00:01:47,880
so, positive things
that you’d love to be doing.

25
00:01:47,881 –> 00:01:53,200
And now imagine that these are
the people in your surroundings –

26
00:01:53,201 –> 00:01:55,686
what kind of person you’ll become?

27
00:01:55,687 –> 00:01:59,486
Think about it – will you go to
parties by yourself?

28
00:01:59,487 –> 00:02:02,829
Will you complain about
the world by yourself?

29
00:02:02,830 –> 00:02:06,900
No. You’ll automatically
adjust to such people.

30
00:02:06,901 –> 00:02:12,600
It’ll have a very big impact on your life
and these people will pull you upward.

31
00:02:12,601 –> 00:02:16,914
Sorry, becuse it’s windy
and I hope you hear me well.

32
00:02:16,915 –> 00:02:21,679
And now, I presented these two examples
to make your realize that

33
00:02:21,680 –> 00:02:26,914
it doesn’t matter whether you’re in
the positive or negative environment –

34
00:02:26,915 –> 00:02:32,079
you’ll always derive from
this environment and adjust to it.

35
00:02:32,080 –> 00:02:36,257
That’s very important, because
you may have good intentions,

36
00:02:36,258 –> 00:02:41,586
but if you remain in your negative
environment, it’ll always drag you down.

37
00:02:41,587 –> 00:02:46,029
Even if you want to move forward
and you have an idea for life,

38
00:02:46,030 –> 00:02:48,686
your surroundings will drag you down.

39
00:02:48,687 –> 00:02:52,414
That’s because if you tell
your negative surroundings

40
00:02:52,415 –> 00:02:58,557
that you want to open a business,
educate, go to college, anything positive,

41
00:02:58,558 –> 00:03:00,428
what will you hear?

42
00:03:00,429 –> 00:03:05,100
They’ll respond negatively
to the fact that you want to develop,

43
00:03:05,101 –> 00:03:08,314
be a better person and
they’ll drag you down.

44
00:03:08,315 –> 00:03:12,839
On the other hand,
if you have nice people around you,

45
00:03:12,840 –> 00:03:17,639
everything will go your way,
as they’ll pull you upward.

46
00:03:17,640 –> 00:03:22,257
I have a whole list of things
I want to tell you about,

47
00:03:22,258 –> 00:03:25,413
so that I won’t forget anything.

48
00:03:25,414 –> 00:03:28,400
Why do you speak Polish?

49
00:03:28,401 –> 00:03:33,814
Because everyone around you
speak Polish, when you live in Poland.

50
00:03:33,815 –> 00:03:38,943
Whether you want it or not,
everyone will be speaking Polish

51
00:03:38,944 –> 00:03:42,386
and you’ll also learn this language.

52
00:03:42,387 –> 00:03:47,686
That’s another example that
your environment influences you a lot

53
00:03:47,687 –> 00:03:50,500
and you can’t do anything about it.

54
00:03:50,501 –> 00:03:54,386
In Poland, more and more
people speak English

55
00:03:54,387 –> 00:03:59,257
and there’s a lot of stuff
written and spoken in English.

56
00:03:59,258 –> 00:04:01,986
So, most people start speaking English.

57
00:04:01,987 –> 00:04:05,300
Why? Because we’re surrounded by
these things

58
00:04:05,301 –> 00:04:09,557
and sometimes we need to know
this language to do something.

59
00:04:09,558 –> 00:04:12,743
So, we’re adjusting
to these circumstances.

60
00:04:12,744 –> 00:04:18,439
Just like it was in Poland in the past –
why people learned Russian in school?

61
00:04:18,440 –> 00:04:22,771
Because we were influenced by the East
and we adjusted to it.

62
00:04:22,772 –> 00:04:24,943
Now, the world has changed.

63
00:04:24,944 –> 00:04:29,771
People used to leave back then
and exposed to different surroundings,

64
00:04:29,772 –> 00:04:32,200
richer ones, to have more in life.

65
00:04:32,201 –> 00:04:37,114
That’s why you should surround
yourself with people better than you

66
00:04:37,115 –> 00:04:40,240
and why bad environment drags you down.

67
00:04:40,241 –> 00:04:45,686
I’ve been listening to
a cool podcast about US soldiers.

68
00:04:45,687 –> 00:04:50,743
When they’re in the military,
they’re at their best,

69
00:04:50,744 –> 00:04:58,714
they’re very disciplined and very focused
on being the best version of themselves.

70
00:04:58,715 –> 00:05:02,880
Their beds are made perfectly
and these people are probably

71
00:05:02,920 –> 00:05:08,871
the most disciplined people in the world,
when they’re in the military.

72
00:05:08,872 –> 00:05:13,829
But it’s often the case that
after they leave the military,

73
00:05:13,830 –> 00:05:16,243
they literally just descend.

74
00:05:16,244 –> 00:05:19,443
That’s because
they don’t have a discipline,

75
00:05:19,444 –> 00:05:24,171
their physical condition is weakening
and they often start drinking.

76
00:05:24,172 –> 00:05:28,429
Why? Because their military environment
required them to be

77
00:05:28,430 –> 00:05:31,686
a great and strong person,
train, etc.

78
00:05:31,687 –> 00:05:35,029
Once they left,
they fell into bad surroundings,

79
00:05:35,030 –> 00:05:39,271
they had no motivation or purpose
and their life got worse.

80
00:05:39,272 –> 00:05:43,999
That’s another example how important is
the environment you’re in.

81
00:05:44,000 –> 00:05:46,914
When I was young,
being in college,

82
00:05:46,915 –> 00:05:51,700
I had a bunch of friends
and my family around.

83
00:05:51,701 –> 00:05:56,514
My friends were cool,
but their main way of spending time

84
00:05:56,515 –> 00:06:00,029
was drinking alcohol,
smoking cigarettes,

85
00:06:00,030 –> 00:06:05,029
leaving classes
and not doing anything interesting.

86
00:06:05,030 –> 00:06:08,071
And guess what kind of person I was?

87
00:06:08,072 –> 00:06:10,614
Yes, I was the same person as them.

88
00:06:10,615 –> 00:06:14,914
I used to go out for drinking
alcohol, I was wasting my time,

89
00:06:14,915 –> 00:06:19,171
I didn’t know what to do with my life
and I even enjoyed it.

90
00:06:19,172 –> 00:06:22,943
Why? Because I was
in such an environment of people

91
00:06:22,944 –> 00:06:26,043
and I didn’t know
that I can do different.

92
00:06:26,044 –> 00:06:28,857
I wanted to adjust and not be rejected.

93
00:06:28,858 –> 00:06:32,571
Leaving a harmful group of people
is very difficult,

94
00:06:32,572 –> 00:06:34,786
as no one wants to be rejected.

95
00:06:34,787 –> 00:06:40,879
That’s because rejection from the group
simply meant death for us back then.

96
00:06:40,880 –> 00:06:45,014
Nowadays, we also need to have
other people in our lives,

97
00:06:45,015 –> 00:06:47,343
but it’s a little different.

98
00:06:47,344 –> 00:06:52,800
We have this deeply ingrained thought
that we have to remain in this group.

99
00:06:52,801 –> 00:06:56,957
It takes a lot of effort from us to
change our environment

100
00:06:56,958 –> 00:06:59,414
and disattach from the group.

101
00:06:59,415 –> 00:07:04,471
So, how to change your environment
for the one which lift you upward?

102
00:07:04,472 –> 00:07:09,357
Luckily, nowadays you have the internet,
books, e-books, YouTube and –

103
00:07:09,358 –> 00:07:13,871
no matter what situation you’re in –
you can start reading books

104
00:07:13,872 –> 00:07:17,457
written by successful people
and cool biographies.

105
00:07:17,458 –> 00:07:21,671
I started my so-called
self-development from reading books

106
00:07:21,672 –> 00:07:26,857
by Arnold Schwarzenegger – great book –
Richard Branson, and many others.

107
00:07:26,858 –> 00:07:30,643
It’s not about getting excited with
some biographies,

108
00:07:30,644 –> 00:07:33,643
thinking that
you have to be a billionaire.

109
00:07:33,644 –> 00:07:38,829
The point is to surround yourself with
better people and to be motivated.

110
00:07:38,830 –> 00:07:43,829
When you read books, you slowly
become motivated to be a better person

111
00:07:43,830 –> 00:07:46,871
and you start thinking that you can.

112
00:07:46,872 –> 00:07:50,043
You slowly start leaving
your old environment

113
00:07:50,044 –> 00:07:52,500
and try being better than it.

114
00:07:52,501 –> 00:07:56,586
When I was starting my journey,
except for reading books,

115
00:07:56,587 –> 00:08:00,729
I invested in courses,
learned about business and Amazon.

116
00:08:00,730 –> 00:08:05,986
Over time, my friends consigned to history
and I was meeting new people.

117
00:08:05,987 –> 00:08:10,529
Now, I invested in a rather expensive
course that costed me $300,

118
00:08:10,530 –> 00:08:15,657
which brings together business people
who can meet, so I gain knowledge

119
00:08:15,658 –> 00:08:19,157
and surround myself with
new people in this way.

120
00:08:19,158 –> 00:08:23,657
Nowadays, we have the internet
and we can connect with people

121
00:08:23,658 –> 00:08:27,671
from all over the world –
I encourage you to do the same.

122
00:08:27,672 –> 00:08:30,943
If you don’t have people
in your surroundings

123
00:08:30,944 –> 00:08:33,229
with whom
you’d want to hang out,

124
00:08:33,230 –> 00:08:35,329
you can find them online.

125
00:08:35,330 –> 00:08:39,300
You can learn, meet people,
watch movies, read books –

126
00:08:39,301 –> 00:08:41,243
that’s your starting point.

127
00:08:41,244 –> 00:08:44,200
Over time, your life will start to change.

128
00:08:44,201 –> 00:08:47,286
So, I encourage you to act,
meet new people,

129
00:08:47,287 –> 00:08:50,914
change your environment,
reject what you don’t want

130
00:08:50,915 –> 00:08:54,871
and add the things you want
in order to change your life.
