How to quit smoking effectively?

In this article, you will learn how to effectively stop smoking cigarettes. There are as many methods of quitting smoking as there are smokers who have quit (or not) — everyone did it a little differently. Unfortunately, often ineffective or just for a while. In this article, I want to show you that quitting smoking is easy assuming that you want to change your life on various levels.

The topic of smoking has unfortunately accompanied me since the sixth grade of primary school. For a very long time, I have struggled with this addiction (with breaks it was about 10 years). Although, I managed to quit smoking for up to one year. However, unfortunately, over time I returned to smoking and for many years I could not escape this addiction. Cigarettes have been everywhere since the earliest years. A large part of my family smoked around me when I was a kid, then friends at school and college — a large part of them were smokers too, and I couldn’t help it. Well, is it actually true I couldn’t?

How to effectively quit smoking cigarettes? My philosophy and way to quit smoking

Until I was about 25, I continually struggled with the subject of smoking. My addiction kept coming back, and despite my great desire, I couldn’t give up smoking for much longer. Even my asthmatic ailments didn’t stop me from reaching for cigarettes. Unfortunately, cigarettes were everywhere in my family home, my girlfriend was smoking at the time, and a lot of friends were too.

Giving up smoking is like many other things in life — someone once said you were the kind of person you surround yourself with. My miracle method for quitting smoking turned out to be changing my environment and setting my mind on things that eliminate smoking.

What do I mean by that?

Do you think you’ll be able to quit smoking if you live with people who smoke cigarettes? Do you think that if you go out to parties where most people smoke and if you work among smokers you will get rid of the addiction? Unfortunately, if you try to quit smoking in this situation, the chances of doing so are slim. Even if you manage to quit smoking for a while, sooner or later you will be in a situation where there will be cigarettes around, and you will probably have a weaker day or be in a bad mood — then you will probably succumb. Even if you can make it for a long time without smoking, being with smokers will make you experience frequent torment because you will simply see the temptation all the time. Our surroundings draw us in, and subconsciously we want to resemble our surroundings.

Therefore, actively avoid people and situations related to smoking and unhealthy lifestyles. Instead of sitting in a pub, do sports. Meet people who run a healthy lifestyle and try to enjoy being a healthy person. Avoid people who smoke and pursue a smoker’s lifestyle.

Change your life instead of fighting addiction

As you will work and live in an environment where people practice healthy lifestyles, learning and development, you will, willingly or unwillingly, draw behaviour and habits from such people. If everyone around you is interested in their health, doing sports then you will be moving in that direction too. If, on the other hand, your environment is made of people who like to sit around drinking beer and going to parties then you will also go with them. These are just extreme examples, but I want to make you aware that your environment shapes you and your thoughts.

How to effectively quit smoking cigarettes?

Change direction and surroundings

Instead of fighting smoking, take charge. Sign up for gym, work on yourself, develop yourself and read books. Improve yourself and learn to enjoy it. There is nothing more pleasant than a feeling of being a healthy person who do, for example, some sport (it can even be an ordinary walk). Focus on being healthy, take care of your diet, physical exercises and mental development. Educate yourself and be a conscious person. You know very well what kind of lifestyle helps you and what kind of lifestyle kills you. Are you sure you want to hang out with people who are going in a direction not necessarily suitable for you? Set goals and work on yourself. Get better.

How did I reject my environment (and cigarette smoking)?

While I was still in college, I had a nice group of friends. Unfortunately, their goal was to drink beer and party etc. I was subconsciously involved in all this, and I didn’t realize that I was just like my surroundings. You can’t win with that. My then partner whom I had been dating for many years, was a compulsive smoker, as was her family. The topic of smoking was raised every 15 minutes. Every once in a while there was a time to smoke, or someone called to say you need to buy cigarettes. It was also always necessary to buy a mouth freshener, because cigarettes, after all, smell bad, etc. How could I quit smoking in such a situation? There was no chance. Even enduring some time without a cigarette, sooner or later I succumbed.

Today I do not hang out with smokers and do not spend time in their company. I automatically and consciously reject such people from my environment. You may say that it’s a bit exaggerated and selfish, but I have a right to my health and I don’t want to be in a company that has a negative impact on me.

You can apply this principle to many aspects of your life

Hang out with healthy and athletic people. Then, you will also become a sporty person, because sooner or later they will get you of your house for training or for a walk. You want to be a smarter person in some field, you just hang out with people who can teach you something. You want to smoke? Hang out with smokers — they’ll teach you how to do it and give you a cigarette when you have a moment of doubt. It’s up to you to decide.

Or use e-cigarettes?

I don’t think e-cigarettes should be used. Unfortunately, they won’t unteach you the habit of smoking. Of course, it’s better to smoke e-cigarettes than standard cigarettes. However, try to move away from the topic of smoking and go beyond it, which means take care of yourself on many other levels as well.

Should I use nicotine pills/gums/plasters?

In the initial period, it is worthwhile to support yourself with nicotine orally or in the form of patches, as the shock of quitting smoking is considerable and, despite a strong will, you can make the process of quitting a little easier on yourself, however. By using supplements you provide yourself with a dose of nicotine and it is much easier to struggle with hunger. After a few weeks, you will spontaneously stop taking the pills, as you will no longer need them. Always have such pills with you in case of emergency for a minimum of one more year, because if a crisis hits you, you can rescue yourself with a nicotine pill. There is nothing worse than reaching for a cigarette even after a long time without addiction — addiction suddenly renews and sometimes years of work are wasted.
