How to publish a paperback book on Amazon? See what the process of publishing your own book product on Amazon looks like

I recently published an article and a video on how to release a book on Amazon as an eBook for Amazon Kindle. In this post, I would like to discuss this topic in more details and show you how to publish a paperback book on Amazon. If you have read the previous article about publishing an eBook on Amazon Kindle, you know that this is a quite simple and trouble-free process, and delivering your product to the customer is virtually cost-free. What it looks like with a paperback book? A paperback book for Amazon is created in the same way as an eBook. Amazon and Kindle Direct Publishing take care of the process of dispatching and printing books for you.

Amazon and Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)

Kindle Direct Publishing (owned by Amazon) is responsible for handling paperback books on Amazon. Kindle Direct Publishing is a tool for creating and publishing your paper books and eBooks. As a Kindle Direct Publishing (the platform is completely free) user, you create virtual/electronic versions of your paper books the same way as when creating an eBook.

Now the coolest part — once the book is on KDP, it becomes available on Amazon within a few working days. Your book is printed automatically and only on demand (Print on Demand), so you don’t have to pay any printing costs or, most importantly, bear any risks. Kindle Direct Publishing and Amazon take care of the print, storage, distribution, shipping and customer service activities, providing you a headache-free and easy solution. From your perspective, the creation and sale of a paperback book look very similarly as the creation and sale of an eBook. You could say that your job after publishing a book is just to watch your bottom line, because Amazon doesn’t even share with you the details of customers who bought your product.

If you are familiar with publishing and handling electronic books (eBooks) on Amazon then publishing paper books will be just as easy for you. In addition, if you already have your eBooks on Amazon then you can also publish them in a paper version and link their sales pages together, to view both the electronic and paper versions of your product at the same time.

Fiction vs Non-fiction, which books should you release?

When you publish your books on Amazon, you can choose between two paths. The first is publishing fiction books. This is a more difficult option for me, because it requires finding people who can write well (in case we pay someone to write a book for us). Of course, you can write fiction books in English by yourself if you feel you can do it. The second option (non-fiction) gives us the opportunity to publish shorter and simpler books on Amazon. The possible categories and niches are almost endless.

Non-fiction books can be relatively short (several dozen pages) and may include solutions to specific problems, recipes, advice on a particular subject and more. Feel free to choose any topic you want. You can even publish products with virtually no content (so-called notebooks) at no cost, with KDP and on-demand printing feature — especially if you’re just starting your Amazon adventure. I am myself in favour of publishing rather simple books and products. I would like to remind you that you do not publish the books under your own name. Of course, there is such a possibility if you create your own content by yourself. However, most entrepreneurs operating in this business publish books under pseudonyms or under a brand of choice (this does not need to be a name).

How to publish a paperback book on Amazon? Key tools

If you read my previous post on how to publish an eBook for Amazon Kindle, it will be much easier for you to release a paper book on Amazon, because the process is very similar and as a matter of fact you use the same tools. Once again, the main tool is Kindle Direct Publishing, which is the official platform for publishing paper books on Amazon. Kindle Direct Publishing offers a friendly interface and is a free platform. In addition to Kindle Direct Publishing, you’ll also need someone who will write the book to you. To this end, you can use Fiverr or e.g. WriteArticlesForMe.com. The first one will allow you to have a job done by people around the world who will write a book in English for reasonable money. The second website is even simpler, because we do not have to hire anyone. We only provide an interesting topic with details and soon after we receive the final content.

How do I find the right niche and idea for a book?

I recommend all of my course attendees to start their publishing adventure with careful reconnaissance on Amazon — you won’t be able to escape it, although many people would like to do it. Even the most creative person will not be able to boast fine achievements without proper analysis of this sales platform and without previewing the competition already in place. Amazon has a tonnes of books (eBook and paperback items) published through KDP that sell very well. Every beginner should spend a lot of time viewing the best products, categories, covers, descriptions, and sales rankings. This will give you the first ideas for your products.

The next step is to choose the right niche for your products. A niche is in other words a theme/subject in which our product will solve some problems and satisfy buyers’ needs. The example of a niche may be health, sport, diets, investment, personal development, cryptocurrencies, chess, etc. The Amazon store is divided into categories that show us very well the main niches and the subniches.

What are the costs of publishing a book for Amazon?

The cost of publishing a simple paper book is the same as the cost of publishing a simple eBook. At the beginning of your adventure in this business, you will pay approximately $200 for a simple book (content, cover, basic promotion). Of course, this amount is only an example. If you try really hard, you can do it more cost-effectively, but you can obviously do it by investing much more. My advice is as follows — at the beginning, it’s best to start with simple electronic books and then add paper copies (the content remains the same). In this way, we have two versions of the book at a low cost — the electronic one and the paperback one.

In the process of publishing your own book on Amazon through KDP, it is very important to publish both a paper copy of the book (printed on demand) and an electronic version (eBook). Depending on the product itself, different versions of the product may sell differently. If you, for example, issue a cooking book, the electronic version of this book will be more convenient for someone who likes to cook. 

However, adding a paper version of this product will also make it a great gift option for a loved one (it’s hard to give someone an eBook). Despite the significantly higher price of a paper version of such a book (eBook can cost $3, and paper version even $20), you may be able to earn more on the paperback version. On the other hand, the eBook version also allows you to monetize the pages read, as Amazon users with Kindle Unlimited can read your book for free and you as an author receive payment for each page they read.

How to publish a book on Amazon? On-demand printing and earnings

The biggest advantage of publishing books through Amazon and Kindle Direct Publishing is that books are printed on demand and we do not have to invest a penny in printing. Your earnings depend only on the sold quantity. When you market a simple book that is sold in small quantities, you can also make long-term money. When publishing my own book in Poland, I am forced to invest heavily in printing my product. By offering print on-demand service, Amazon greatly reduces the risk to authors and as a result it may make sense to publish a book that will sell only occasionally.

Although the cost of printing a paper book is higher than the cost of sending an e-book to a customer, you are able to earn even more on a printed book. With the price somewhere between $5 and $10, you can even earn a few dollars for yourself for each sold copy. People are able to pay more for a physical book because it has more value in their eyes.

Who will buy your books for Amazon?

The most important advantage of publishing books on Amazon is the fact that you are making your products available to the global market and especially to the US market. There are more than 300 million people in the US who earn very well and are willing to spend their money. Amazon is the largest online store in the world. Customers visiting Amazon often have their credit cards already linked with their accounts and are able to buy your product with a single click. It is not a problem for them to buy a simple book for $5 on a subject that will solve their problems. 

What’s more, when you publish your book through Amazon KDP, it becomes available in the UK, Canada, Europe, India, and on several other markets. Amazon is growing and expanding its reach all the time, and the coronavirus crisis has definitely improved the platform’s (already dominant) global position.

Your book may also be available in one click for non-Amazon stores around the world. Simply check the appropriate box in KDP and third-party stores will be able to order your book in wholesale quantities (expanded Distribution).
